Recently looking at IBC, message passing and these things, the more I look, the more I feel that cross-chain is simply: who do you trust? A transfer from A to B involves not only that "bridge" but also trusting the consensus of both chains, the relayer responsible for passing messages, the verification proofs of lightweight clients/contract implementations, and the intermediate configuration and upgrade permissions that might suddenly malfunction.

Sometimes the tags seen on tools are also quite lagging, and can even be misleading. Staring at "fund flow" for a long time can make you more anxious, so now I care more about component lists and permission boundaries.
My biggest fear is not slowness, but chaos: slow can be waited for, but chaos means trusting the chain is broken at some point without knowing where it went wrong.
Anyway, I have a very small position in cross-chain, and being able to sleep well is the most important.
