What sets humans apart from other animals is not upright walking, nor the use of tools (chimpanzees also use sticks to fish for termites). The essence of humanity is that we are the only species capable of stepping outside the “natural evolution algorithm.”

1. Why is this great?
Evolution in nature is like “the blind men feeling the elephant,” only capable of making tiny mutations based on existing genes. It can never foresee the future, and it cannot endure the burden of underdeveloped wings today for the sake of flight tomorrow.
Human creation is a “God’s-eye view.” We possess cognition.
The essence of cognition: it is the ability to simulate the operation of the universe within the brain (or silicon-based chips).
The essence of creation: because we first “see” things that do not exist (for example, molecules that can cure cancer), and then reverse-engineer them, leaping over the billions of years of trial and error in nature to directly materialize them.
Result: We bring into the material world combinations that otherwise would never have appeared. This is the first time since the Big Bang that matter has been generated by “intention” rather than “probability.”

2. Why is this terrifying?
Although natural evolution is slow, it has the strongest safety valve: time.
If a dangerous virus is too lethal, it will kill all its hosts and then go extinct itself. Nature maintains ecological balance through this brutal feedback mechanism.
Human creation has broken this safety valve:
We can instantly synthesize super-entities that do not exist in nature in laboratories.
We can create self-replicating nanomachines (minimalist cells).
The root of the terror: Our creative ability is growing exponentially, while our wisdom and ethics are still growing linearly.
