OpenAI Plans Desktop ‘Superapp’ to Fend Off Anthropic, Merging ChatGPT, Codex, and Atlas Browser

Facing fierce competition and internal fragmentation, OpenAI is consolidating its core products into a single, unified desktop experience to win back developers and enterprise clients.

In a significant strategic pivot, OpenAI has announced plans to launch a desktop “superapp” that will merge its popular ChatGPT chatbot, the Codex AI coding platform, and its upcoming Atlas web browser into a single interface . The move, reported by The Wall Street Journal and confirmed by the company, represents a major shift away from a fragmented product strategy toward a focused effort to dominate the AI-powered workplace .

The consolidation is driven by intensifying competition, particularly from rival Anthropic, and a desire to streamline internal operations as both companies prepare for potential IPOs .

Ending the ‘Side Quests’

Over the past year, OpenAI expanded rapidly, launching a series of independent products, including the Sora video generation tool and various experimental hardware projects . While this “multi-bet” strategy allowed for exploration, it also led to resource fragmentation and internal confusion.

According to an internal memo cited by the WSJ, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, Fidji Simo, told employees that the company’s previous approach had created too much complexity. “That fragmentation has been slowing us down and making it harder to hit the quality bar we want,” Simo said . She emphasized the need to stop getting distracted by “side quests” and instead double down on what is working .

The new strategy represents a shift from CEO Sam Altman’s previous “100 small bets” philosophy to a unified “one big bet” approach, focusing resources on a single, cohesive product .

What the Superapp Includes

The desktop superapp will integrate three of OpenAI’s key technologies :

· ChatGPT: The central conversational AI interface that will serve as the command hub.
· Codex: The AI-powered coding assistant, which has seen explosive growth with over 2 million weekly active users. Codex will serve as the “backbone” for the new app’s productivity features .
· Atlas: An AI-native browser built on Chromium, designed to perform web-based research and data extraction tasks autonomously .

The goal is to create an “agentic” AI workbench, where the system doesn’t just answer questions but can execute complex tasks directly on the user’s computer, such as writing code, analyzing data, and managing workflows .

The ‘Code Red’ Trigger: Anthropic’s Rise

The urgency behind this consolidation stems from the rapid success of OpenAI’s primary rival, Anthropic. While OpenAI captured headlines with flashy announcements, Anthropic quietly made massive inroads with developers and enterprise clients .

Anthropic’s Claude Code tool has been a particular success, reportedly generating over $2.5 billion in annualized revenue and generating an estimated 4% of all public GitHub commits . The startup has also aggressively expanded its enterprise offerings with products like Claude Cowork, which allows users to command a desktop AI agent remotely .

Alarmed by this progress, OpenAI internally declared a “Code Red” status to mobilize its resources. Internal data reportedly shows that Anthropic now commands approximately 40% of enterprise LLM spending, surpassing OpenAI's 27% share . The competition is further intensified by reports that both companies are targeting IPOs by the end of 2026, adding pressure to demonstrate strong revenue growth .

Implementation and Rollout

The rollout of the superapp will occur in phases. OpenAI plans to first enhance the existing Codex application with new agentic capabilities in the coming months, allowing it to handle broader productivity tasks beyond coding . Following this, the ChatGPT and Atlas browser functionalities will be fully integrated into the unified desktop environment.

Notably, the mobile version of ChatGPT is expected to remain unchanged, operating as a separate standalone app . The company has stated that this new structure will allow its research and product teams to collaborate more closely, focusing on improving a single core product rather than juggling multiple independent initiatives .

A New Front in the AI War

The development of this desktop superapp signals a pivotal moment in the AI industry. The battle is no longer just about which company has the most powerful large language model, but which can build the most effective and integrated workspace .

By creating a unified AI workbench, OpenAI is aiming to capture the desktop entry point for millions of knowledge workers and developers—a space where Anthropic has recently gained a significant lead. As both companies gear up for their next phase of growth, the success of this “superapp” will likely determine who leads the next era of AI-powered productivity .
