On April 7th local time, the World Athletics announced that starting from 2030, the World Athletics Marathon Championships will be established, and the marathon event will be separated from the World Athletics Championships schedule. According to the plan, the marathon will still appear as a competition event in the 2027 and 2029 World Athletics Championships. But from 2030 onward, the marathon will be held as a standalone championship; starting from 2031, the World Athletics Championships will no longer include marathons or other road running events. World Athletics stated that the newly established Marathon Championships will be held annually, with the men’s and women’s events taking turns. Meanwhile, the existing World Athletics Road Running Championships will continue to be held as an independent event. Additionally, World Athletics mentioned that preliminary negotiations have been initiated with Greece, and Athens is expected to become the host city for the inaugural World Athletics Marathon Championships in 2030.
