Chevron stated on Tuesday that its downstream facilities at the Wheatstone Liquefied Natural Gas plant in Western Australia have suffered severe cyclone damage, with both production lines shut down.

Chevron Australia Operations and Maintenance Director Danny Wodell said that the two liquefied natural gas processing lines at the 8.9 million-ton-per-year facility remain offline after Tropical Cyclone Narelle struck the region last week.

“We have several fan-type air-cooled heat exchangers damaged,” he said at the Australian Domestic Gas Outlook Conference in Sydney.

“We currently have a dedicated team working on repairs.”

He added that the damage at Wheatstone is more severe than at its Gorgon plant (Australia’s largest LNG export facility), and exceeds the damage caused by previous cyclones in the region.

Chevron said on Sunday that, due to the damage, it is unlikely that Wheatstone will return to full capacity within a few weeks.

Chevron is a US-based energy giant with significant liquefied natural gas operations in Australia.
