I just reviewed the Altcoin Season Index, and it’s at 49, so basically the market is at a standstill. Neither clearly favors Bitcoin nor altcoins. It’s that rare moment where nothing dominates decisively.
For those who don’t know, this index looks at how the top 100 cryptocurrencies (sin stablecoins) are performing compared to Bitcoin over the last 90 days. If 75% of those altcoins outperform Bitcoin, then you have altcoin season. If not, it’s Bitcoin season. The number 49 means we’re right in the middle, with no clear winner.
Historically, when the index rises a lot (above 75), it’s because money is moving from Bitcoin into smaller projects in search of higher gains. That happened in 2017 and 2021 during the booms. But when it falls (near 0), Bitcoin dominates because people are looking for safety. Right now, we’re in balance.
What’s interesting is that Bitcoin remains strong thanks to spot ETFs and institutional adoption, but some altcoins in sectors like real-asset tokenization and decentralized infrastructure are also showing strength. That’s what keeps the index neutral. On-chain activity is also mixed: Bitcoin with high activity, but Ethereum and other platforms are also active, with developers working on updates.
With Bitcoin dominance at 55.75% and Ethereum at 10.43%, the market is basically waiting for the next big move. For tactical traders, a reading of 49 suggests avoiding aggressive bets on one side. The prudent approach is to maintain diversification between Bitcoin and high-conviction altcoins. Automated trading systems use this index to adjust their allocations.
For long-term investors, this is like a market health check. If the index rises above 60, that would be a sign of higher risk, and you could consider more altcoins. If it drops below 40, then it’s time to be defensive. Right now, caution is advised, and you should do your fundamental homework before putting serious money into any side.
The key is to watch whether the index breaks decisively above 55 or below 45. That would be the turning point. In the meantime, the market waits, and the index stays in that neutral 49. Interesting moment to monitor.
