U.S. President Trump signed an executive order on March 31, requiring states to implement stricter mail-in voting rules and instructing the federal government to establish a nationwide list of qualified voters. According to the executive order published on the White House website, Trump asked the Department of Homeland Security to cooperate with the Social Security Administration to create a verified list of eligible American voters for each state. The order also mandates that absentee ballots can only be sent to voters listed on approved mailing ballot lists by each state and requires the use of secure ballot envelopes with unique tracking barcodes. Before signing the bill in the Oval Office, Trump claimed, “Mail-in voting fraud is a common occurrence.” He stated that the new regulations “will be very helpful for elections.” ( Xinhua News Agency )
