Japanese lawmakers oppose lifting the ban on the export of lethal weapons

On March 31, multiple peace groups in Japan held a rally at the House of Representatives of the National Diet of Japan to oppose the Japanese government’s push to lift the ban on exporting lethal weapons. They believe that this move by the Takashi government violates the spirit of Japan’s pacifist constitution and will escalate regional tensions. Moreover, Japan’s continued increases in defense spending will burden the public and squeeze social security. Several Japanese senators and representatives attended the rally. A member of a Japanese peace group pointed out that exporting weapons with lethal capabilities in itself violates Japan’s constitution, and that profiting from this and then continuing to produce weapons would put the country into a “death cycle.”
