A few hours before the US and Iran announced a ceasefire, investors bet around $950 million to short oil prices. This is the latest massive bet on the world's largest traded commodity, just before US President Trump’s major policy announcement.
According to data from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), at 19:45 GMT on Tuesday (03:45 Wednesday Beijing time), investors sold a total of 8,600 Brent crude and US crude oil futures contracts.
Less than three hours later, around 22:30 GMT on Tuesday (06:30 Wednesday Beijing time), Trump abandoned his threat to destroy “the entire civilization” and announced a two-week ceasefire agreement with Iran. This led to a roughly 15% drop in crude oil futures at the open of the Wednesday trading session, breaking below $100 per barrel.
