There has been a longstanding mystery about the origin of Bitcoin that has puzzled the entire crypto community, and today I want to discuss this topic. In 2010, Bitcoin's mysterious creator Satoshi Nakamoto suddenly disappeared, and since then, countless people have tried to crack this identity puzzle. One of the most convincing guesses is that — American cryptographer Nick Szabo is very likely to be Satoshi himself.
Why would Nick Szabo be the strongest candidate? First, let's understand this person. Nick Szabo was born in 1964, holding a computer science degree from the University of Washington and a law degree from George Washington University. He is not only an authority in cryptography but also a core figure in the Cypherpunk movement. This guy has always been very mysterious, rarely giving interviews, but his dedication to privacy protection and encryption technology has never changed.
The key point is — Nick Szabo proposed the concept of "Bit Gold" in 1998, which is essentially the predecessor of Bitcoin. In this concept, he explained how to create a decentralized digital currency using cryptographic principles. Comparing this to the Bitcoin white paper released by Satoshi in 2008, the logical frameworks of the two are astonishingly similar. Moreover, Nick Szabo is also the inventor of the smart contract concept (proposed in 1994), which later became the foundation of Ethereum. With two such critical projects behind him, it's hard not to be suspicious.
There is quite a bit of evidence supporting that Nick Szabo is Satoshi. For example, their writing styles and word choices are almost identical. Nick Szabo has the cryptographic skills sufficient to create a project like Bitcoin, and some have even found that a wallet address associated with Satoshi begins with "1NS," which coincidentally matches the initials of Nick Szabo's name. Even ChatGPT and Elon Musk believe that Nick Szabo is the most similar to Satoshi, with Musk reasoning that Szabo's ideas perfectly align with Bitcoin's ideology as a substitute financial tool.
But there are also many objections. Satoshi mentioned Bit Gold in the white paper but did not imply that Nick Szabo was himself. Some believe Satoshi is Japanese, and Nick Szabo has no Japanese heritage. More interestingly, Nakamoto often appeared unfamiliar with legal issues related to Bitcoin, even claiming he was not a lawyer, but Nick Szabo has a legal background, which seems inconsistent. Most importantly, Nick Szabo himself has always denied creating Bitcoin.
Overall, while Nick Szabo's contributions to cryptography and decentralized finance are undeniable, whether he is Satoshi Nakamoto remains an unresolved question. This mystery might never be solved. Some have also proposed another hypothesis that Bitcoin was created jointly by Dorian Nakamoto and Hal Finney, but that is just speculation. What do you think about this?
