Five people in the UK were sentenced for "wrench attack" cryptocurrency holdings, with the maximum sentence of six and a half years.


This case occurred in July 2025, when the victim was targeted in a bar, then forcibly taken home, where facial recognition was used to unlock the account, stealing over 10k pounds and cryptocurrencies.
Coinbase reported suspicious transactions, which led to the case being solved.
Such cases are not isolated. By 2025, 72 crypto-related entity coercion incidents have been confirmed worldwide, a 75% increase, with France leading at 19 cases.
