Discover how to manage subaccounts effectively for cryptocurrency trading on Gate. Set up subaccounts for both spot and futures trading, configure API keys, and segment your trading strategies. This comprehensive guide is designed for Web3 traders and investors.
Managing Subaccounts

What Is a Subaccount

On the platform, your main trading account can host multiple subaccounts, which help you organize daily trading activities more efficiently. Subaccounts let you separate trading strategies and manage risk with increased flexibility. For example, you might use one subaccount for spot trading and another for futures, ensuring a clear division of assets and operations.

The platform offers two subaccount types, each with distinct features and use cases.

The first subaccount type does not support login via the web interface and is designed exclusively for use with API keys. This type works best for automated trading and integration with trading bots. To view details for this subaccount type—including asset transfers and trading history—you must access the subaccount data through your main account on the platform.

The second subaccount type supports independent login with a unique email address and password. In addition to viewing information through your main account, you can log into this subaccount directly on the platform’s website for detailed management and review. Please note: this subaccount type does not support login via the mobile app and is accessible only through the web interface.

How to Create a Subaccount

To create a subaccount, follow these steps. Visit the platform’s official website and log in to your main account. Next, click the user profile icon in the top right corner and select [Subaccount Management] from the menu.

On the resulting page, click [Create Subaccount]. The system will display both subaccount types and their features. If you only need API trading and do not require direct login, select the first subaccount type (API-only) and click [Next Step].

Now, enter a unique username for the subaccount to identify it within the system. After entering the name, click [Next Step]. Complete the security verification, which may include two-factor authentication or email confirmation. Once verification is successful, your subaccount will be created and ready for use.

If you choose the second subaccount type, which requires a separate email login, the process is slightly different. Enter a new email address to be used for subaccount access, set a secure password, re-enter the password to confirm, and enter the verification code sent to that email. Once all fields are complete, click [Next Step]. Finish the security verification process, and your independently accessible subaccount will be created.

Subaccount Management

The subaccount management page gives you a full suite of tools for efficiently administering all subaccounts. The management interface is divided into five main sections: Account Management, API, Asset Management, Transfer History, and Login History. Each section addresses a specific aspect of subaccount management.

Account Management

In the "Subaccount Management" page’s Account Management section, you’ll find a list of all subaccounts with available actions. To manage a particular subaccount, click the [...] (three dots) icon to the right of that account.

For API-only subaccounts (type one), you can [Freeze] the subaccount to temporarily block all operations, or [Enable Futures] to activate futures trading for that subaccount.

For subaccounts requiring email login (type two), you have additional controls: [Freeze] to suspend all activity, [Change Password] to update credentials, [Change Email Address] to modify the associated email, and [Enable Futures] to turn on futures trading features.

Once futures trading is enabled, the subaccount’s status indicator updates from ⊗ (crossed circle) to Ⓥ (check mark in a circle), visually confirming activation.

API

To generate an API key for automated access, click [Create API] in the relevant management section. In the pop-up window, select the desired subaccount from the dropdown list.

Next, set the necessary permissions for the API key. You can allow spot trading (balance inquiries, order placement and cancellation) and futures trading (position management, trade history access). Enter a note describing the API key’s intended use for future reference, then click [Create].

Most crypto platforms require API keys for secure and authenticated access to advanced features. The API key creation process, as described, lets you customize access permissions for each trading operation, giving you granular control over security.

After successfully creating an API key, the system provides a public API Key and a Secret Key. Important: your Secret Key is shown only once—store it securely and never share it or publish it publicly. If you suspect your Secret Key has been compromised, immediately delete the API key using the management interface and create a new one with fresh credentials.

Asset Management

The Asset Management section lets you efficiently transfer crypto assets between accounts. Click [Transfer] to move funds between your main account and any subaccount. You can also transfer assets directly between subaccounts, giving you flexible control over fund allocation.

To make a transfer, specify the source and destination accounts, select the cryptocurrency, and enter the transfer amount. Every transfer is automatically recorded and visible in the Transfer History section, where you can track all asset movements by date, time, amount, and direction.

To check the current balance of a specific subaccount, click [Info] next to the subaccount. This opens a detailed view showing all crypto balances on that subaccount, including available funds, funds in open orders, and total balance.

Login History

For independently accessible subaccounts (type two), you can monitor login history. These subaccounts support direct web login with the registered email and password.

When you log into a subaccount via the web interface, all session data is logged and can be reviewed from your main account. To access this data, open Subaccount Management and select the [Login History] tab.

Here, you’ll see details for each login session: the email address used, the login IP address, geographic location based on IP, and the exact timestamp. This feature makes it easy to track subaccount activity and quickly spot any suspicious or unauthorized access attempts.

Subaccounts help you keep trading strategies separate and independent. You can test and implement multiple strategies simultaneously, accurately measuring each strategy’s performance without mixing results. This structure supports more professional portfolio management and optimal trading decisions.

FAQ
