Vitalik Buterin Urges Removal of Ethereum’s “Most ZK-Hostile” Feature

The Technical Burden Limiting Ethereum’s ZK Ambitions

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has called for the removal of a core blockchain feature he originally created, arguing it severely limits the network’s scalability. His proposal comes as Ethereum accelerates its shift toward privacy-centric infrastructure and addresses technical barriers slowing adoption of the zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (ZK-EVM).

The modular exponentiation precompile, known as modexp, creates verification bottlenecks that are up to 50 times larger than average blocks during zero-knowledge proof generation, according to Buterin. While primarily used for RSA encryption and signature functions by a very limited number of applications, this feature presents major challenges to Ethereum’s future development.

Buterin admits to having designed this problematic feature and says he feels ashamed, advocating for its replacement with computationally equivalent code that would raise gas costs but drastically simplify proof generation. This stance prioritizes ecosystem stability and scaling progress over keeping legacy functions that serve few practical purposes.

ZK-EVMs generate cryptographic proofs to validate Ethereum computations off-chain, supporting faster transaction processing without sacrificing security. The proof generator faces significant challenges from modexp operations, causing major delays in proof creation and directly slowing rollups and layer-2 solutions designed to speed up Ethereum.

This feature’s complexity also increases the risk of consensus failures due to potential edge cases and bugs that threaten network stability. Rather than investing optimization resources into a function used by just 0.01% of users, Buterin suggests replacing the precompile with standard EVM bytecode, which would yield the same results at a higher gas cost. Applications needing modular exponentiation could instead use SNARKs—an alternative cryptographic proof system that reduces inefficiency.

This Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) would fundamentally change how the network processes cryptographic operations that burden zero-knowledge proof systems. The trade-off puts ecosystem stability and scaling advances first, especially as Ethereum faces growing performance demands.

Institutional Gateway Opens as Privacy Solutions Mature

The Ethereum Foundation recently launched “Ethereum for Institutions,” offering structured pathways for businesses and financial organizations to adopt blockchain. This initiative is a significant milestone in bringing Ethereum into traditional finance, addressing strict institutional compliance and audit needs.

The program leverages zero-knowledge proofs, fully homomorphic encryption, and trusted execution environments to deliver compliant, audit-ready applications on public networks. This layered strategy lets institutions benefit from blockchain transparency and security while maintaining the privacy essential for sensitive business operations.

Leading projects like Chainlink, RAILGUN, Aztec Network, and Zama are developing privacy-preserving smart contracts that protect counterparty details and business logic without compromising transparency or composability. These production-ready solutions balance compliance mandates with secure, programmable finance for institutional needs.

Ethereum dominates the real-world asset (RWA) and stablecoin sectors, hosting over 75% of tokenized RWAs and 60% of global stablecoin supply. This leadership shows institutions’ trust in Ethereum’s reliability and robustness. Major financial firms—including BlackRock, Securitize, and Ondo Finance—issue tokenized instruments that offer 24/7 settlement, unmatched transparency, and composability.

Layer-2 networks such as Base, Scroll, and Unichain now secure over $50 billion in value, delivering throughput and cost efficiency for global-scale applications. These scaling solutions prove Ethereum can evolve while maintaining its renowned security and decentralization.

Fast-Tracked Privacy Infrastructure and Technical Refinement

The Ethereum Foundation has launched its Privacy Cluster, now with 47 members and coordinated by Igor Barinov, founder of Blockscout, expanding on efforts begun in 2018 by the Privacy and Scaling Explorations team. This major expansion signals the foundation’s deepening commitment to privacy as a network cornerstone.

The cluster tackles critical issues including surveillance, private data verification, selective identity disclosure, user experience improvements, and support for institutional adoption. These initiatives reflect a comprehensive understanding of the privacy challenges Ethereum faces as it moves toward becoming a genuinely privacy-respecting network.

This move follows the team’s rebrand to Privacy Stewards for Ethereum, marking a shift from theoretical research to practical solutions. This strategic pivot highlights the urgent need to deploy operational privacy protections rather than rely solely on conceptual exploration.

The foundation warns that without robust privacy protections, Ethereum could become the backbone of global surveillance rather than global freedom, potentially pushing institutions and users toward other platforms. This warning underscores the existential importance of privacy for Ethereum’s future.

In a recent effort, Vitalik also introduced GKR—a cryptographic technique that verifies computations ten times faster than traditional methods and supports zero-knowledge proofs that confirm accuracy without revealing underlying data. This marks a major leap in the efficiency of cryptographic proof systems.

The GKR protocol processes two million computations per second on standard laptops. It validates entire Ethereum transactions with just fifty consumer-grade GPUs, compared to legacy methods that require 100 times more computational work than the original calculations. This efficiency opens the door for wider adoption of zero-knowledge technologies.

This breakthrough matters because it speeds up verification, making transactions cheaper and strengthening privacy throughout the network. Integrating these advanced technologies establishes Ethereum as the leader in blockchain privacy innovation while maintaining its promise of decentralization and security.

FAQ

Which Ethereum Feature Does Vitalik Buterin See as Most Hostile to Zero-Knowledge Proofs?
