Spain's Basque Autonomous Community Investigates 541 Cryptocurrency Crime Cases in 2025, Police Establish Specialized Department to Combat

Gate News reports that on March 17, the Basque Autonomous Community police Ertzaintza disclosed that cryptocurrency-related crimes are on the rise in the region. In 2025, a total of 541 related cases have been investigated so far, and investigations are ongoing. The police have equipped specialized tools to monitor crypto transactions across multiple blockchain networks and have established a cybercrime unit consisting of 26 detectives dedicated to combating crypto fraud, hacking, and other crimes. Currently, ongoing cases include 13 suspected crypto frauds, 2 suspected crypto money laundering cases, as well as tax evasion and illegal purchase of goods and services. The police issued a warning that scammers impersonate friends and family on social media platforms like Instagram to offer investment advice, trick victims into installing remote control applications, and steal crypto wallets and bank accounts.
