The founder of Ethereum continues to motivate holders in Hong Kong, promising to continue upgrading Ethereum.
On April 9th, at the "2025 Hong Kong Web3 Carnival" ETHAsia 2025 event, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin delivered a speech on "The Future of Ethereum L1."
He pointed out the current state of Ethereum, with L1 throughput at 15 TPS, an increase in Gas limits, and L2 throughput reaching 250 TPS. The upcoming Pectra upgrade will increase Blob capacity to boost TPS, but it largely depends on the Fusaka upgrade, where in ideal conditions, TPS could even increase to tens of thousands. EIP-7702 has made significant progress, marking the first step towards abstract accounts.
Even though L2 is developing rapidly, L1 expansion is still crucial, as it needs to perform key functions such as providing remedies or supporting users to exit in case of L2 failures. L1 can learn from L2 expansion technologies, while L2 focuses on large-scale transaction processing and experimentation with new technologies.
In the short term, a series of proposals are expected to be implemented in 2026, such as block-level access lists and delayed execution, which can improve Gas limits. Account abstraction has advantages such as enhanced security and experience, and resistance to quantum attacks. In addition, Ethereum is exploring multiple fields such as L1 privacy and EVM upgrades.
In summary, Ethereum needs to improve L1 and L2, think about diversified development, enhance the application layer, prepare for mainstream large-scale applications, with the goal of making L1 the core of the "world computer".
