The 14th of July, known as the Ghost Festival or Zhongyuan Festival, is a day to honor ancestors and to pay respects to lonely souls and wandering ghosts. The elders say that the gates of hell open in July, and after the start of autumn, winter approaches, so offerings of warm clothes must be sent to ancestors and wandering spirits. On this day, there are too many people performing rituals, and the Naihe Bridge is too crowded, so they must cross the Huangquan River underneath the bridge. Therefore, the paper money and clothing used for sacrifices need to be carried across the river by ducks. Thus, it is essential to eat duck during the Ghost Festival.
