Hot Wallet: convenience vs security 🤔

Abstract generation in progress

If you are a newbie in crypto, sooner or later you will start choosing which wallet to use. A Hot Wallet is essentially your “mobile wallet” for crypto that is always online. Think of it as a cash wallet that you carry with you, not a safe at home.

When is a Hot Wallet a good choice?

Pros:

  • Quickly send and receive coins
  • Works from any device through the browser
  • No need to install anything if it's the web version.

Cons:

  • Always online = more risk for hackers
  • If the server goes down, you may lose access
  • Requires frequent security updates

Three Types of Hot Wallets

Web Wallets are the most convenient but the least secure. You depend on the platform.

Mobile wallets - a balance between convenience and control. Crypto is always at hand.

Desktop wallets are more secure than web wallets, but less portable.

Briefly: when to use Hot Wallet?

If the required amount is small ( for trading or payments ), a Hot Wallet is okay. If all your crypto is in the wallet—this is a risk. For large holdings, use a cold wallet ( hardware or paper ).

Gold standard: a small amount in Hot Wallet for trading, the main holding in cold storage.
