The U.S. stock market faces a test of the Supreme Court's ruling on the legality of tariffs
According to reports, the U.S. Supreme Court is about to rule on the legality of Trump's comprehensive tariffs launched in April, which could be the next challenge for the recently soaring stock market, as the ruling once caused a global market crash. The S&P 500 index has rebounded 39% since its lows that month and closed at an all-time high on Thursday, partly due to tariffs finally being lower than Trump's previous threats, as well as the AI investment boom and the continued rapid growth of the U.S. economy providing support. If the U.S. Supreme Court rules that Trump's comprehensive tariffs exceed its authority, there remains significant uncertainty about the future. The likelihood of a ruling this year is decreasing. The court held its last public hearing of the year on Wednesday, with the next session not scheduled until January 9th next year. Wells Fargo Chief Equity Strategist Ohsung Kwon estimated in October that if the tariffs are ruled invalid, by 2026, the earnings of S&P 500 companies before interest and taxes will have increased by 2.4% compared to this year's levels.
