Many traders blame themselves for failures, often attributing it to not achieving “unity of knowledge and action.”

So, what exactly does “unity of knowledge and action” mean in trading?
Many people misunderstand this concept. In Wang Yangming’s philosophy, “knowledge” refers to the innate moral judgments within a person—clear distinctions between right and wrong—pursuing an unchanging truth. However, in the trading market, treating one’s inherent beliefs as absolute truth or judging correctness based on single successes or failures is logically problematic—because “knowledge” in trading is merely based on inductive experience from the past, and experience can never be an absolute truth.
Therefore, in the context of traders, “unity of knowledge and action” should mean: acting based on a set of probabilistic, potentially fallible experiences or logic, and maintaining consistency between actions and current understanding. But this is only the starting point, not the endpoint.
True unity is a dynamic cycle: from cognition to action, using results as feedback to refine understanding, and continuing to act accordingly—repeating this process to bring understanding closer to reality. In this process, results matter but are not the sole standard. A single failure does not necessarily mean complete misunderstanding, but repeated failures definitely indicate flaws.
Ultimately, the unity in trading is not about “being right forever,” but about “being always authentic”—truthfully following the system, genuinely facing feedback, and sincerely iterating and growing.
