  • Senator Cynthia Lummis will retire in 2027 after a single term in the Senate and four in the House.
  • Lummis was the lead architect for major crypto bills including the GENIUS and CLARITY Acts.
  • Her exit creates a leadership vacuum in the Senate Banking Subcommittee on Digital Assets.

Pro-crypto U.S. lawmaker Cynthia Lummis has announced plans to retire from the Senate at the end of her current tenure in 2027.

According to recent reports, Lummis cited the intense session spanning weeks during the economic shutdown as the main reason behind her decision to call it a day.

Lummis Played Numerous Roles as a Crypto Advocate

The lawmaker, who said she did not have it in her to fill out another six years in the Senate, only served a single term at the upper chamber after spending four tenures in the lower house. Before becoming a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Lummis was Wyoming’s Treasurer and held offices in both chambers of the state legislature.

It is worth noting that Lummis has been one of the strongest voices advocating for the crypto industry among U.S. lawmakers. The renowned lawmaker functioned as the Republican lead, with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), in drafting and reintroducing the comprehensive Lummis-Gillibrand Responsible Financial Innovation Act in 2022 and 2023.

More Crypto Involvements for Lummis

In 2025, Lummis became the inaugural chair of the Senate Banking Subcommittee on Digital Assets. A platform that she used to advance crypto-friendly policies and hold hearings on the need for regulatory clarity. She was also deeply involved in negotiating the broader market structure bill, drawing from the CLARITY Act, which the lower chamber already passed.

Besides the above-listed engagements, Lummis has been involved in other notable crypto-inclined legislative processes, including such roles as one of the lead GOP negotiators on the bipartisan GENIUS Act, which was signed into law in late July.

A Trailblazer and an Educator

Beyond the crypto circle, most Wyoming elected officials consider Lummis a trailblazer who has played a significant role in educating other members of Congress, making them aware of how their actions could affect the public.

Her announcement was met with numerous accolades about her time in government, highlighting how much she will be missed.
