Note: The content is lengthy, it is recommended to bookmark it. In 2008, a White Paper titled “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System” shocked the entire tech community. The publisher signed as Сатоши Накамото, but the true identification of this person remains the biggest mystery in the world of Cryptography to this day. Over ten years have passed, and this mysterious creator still remains shrouded in the mists of history.

Interestingly, although Satoshi Nakamoto has long since vanished, the transparent mechanism of the blockchain has actually provided us with clues to track his wealth. On-chain data shows that this father of Bitcoin has never touched the BTC he mined in the genesis block, making him one of the most mysterious billionaires on Earth.

From White Paper to Disappearance: The Trajectory of Сатоши Накамото

Satoshi Nakamoto did not invent blockchain itself, but rather applied this technology for the first time to create a fully decentralized digital currency. The publication of the White Paper in 2008 and the official launch of the Bitcoin network in 2009 mark the beginning of the cryptocurrency era.

In the following two years, he actively participated in community discussions through email and forums, establishing the infrastructure for Bitcoin. But by April 2011, everything suddenly stopped. Satoshi's account fell silent, and there has been no news since. This sudden disappearance sparked countless speculations: Was he afraid of being pursued? Or had he passed away? Or was he simply a virtual identity created collectively?

Candidate Profile: Who Could be Satoshi?

Regarding the true identity of Сатоши Накамoto, multiple candidates are circulating within the cryptopunk community:

Hal Finney — the first user of Bitcoin and the recipient of the first BTC transaction. He was a veteran software developer and a core member of the 1990s cypherpunk movement. However, Finney passed away in 2014 due to a neurodegenerative disease, and throughout his life, he denied being Satoshi.

Nick Szabo — This programmer created the digital currency “Bit Gold” long before Bitcoin was introduced. His writing style is strikingly similar to that of Satoshi Nakamoto, and the timing of their communications aligns perfectly. Although many in the community firmly believe he is the culprit, Szabo vehemently denies it.

Dorian Nakamoto — a Japanese-American who coincidentally shares the same name as Сатoshi. He has worked as a computer engineer in the technology and finance sectors, and even lived in the same area of California as Finney. In an interview, he seemed to imply that he was involved in the development of Bitcoin, but later repeatedly denied it, claiming that the reporter misinterpreted his words.

HBO Documentary: Is the Truth About to Surface?

In October 2024, HBO, in collaboration with director Karen Hobeck, will launch “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery.” Hobeck is known for his mini-series “Q: Into the Storm,” which exposed the truths behind QAnon, and this time he turns his investigative lens towards the identification of Сатoshi Накамoto. The documentary promises to offer new evidence, but the specifics remain for the audience to uncover.

The Invisible Billionaire: The Wealth of Сатоshi Накамoto

Regardless of who Satoshi Nakamoto is, one thing is almost certain — he (or they) is exceptionally wealthy.

On-chain analysts tracked the flow of BTC from the genesis block and early mining, inferring that Satoshi Nakamoto holds about 1 million Bitcoins. Since 2009, this massive asset has never been touched— not a single satoshi has been transferred.

At the current BTC price of $88,040, the market value of this wealth has exceeded 88 billion dollars. This puts Сатоshi Накамoto among the richest individuals in the world, although no one knows who he is.

Eternal Mystery

The truth about Satoshi Nakamoto's identity may never be determined. He could be a genius programmer, a mysterious team, may have passed away, or could be quietly observing how his creation changes the world from some corner.

Interestingly, many people in the cryptocurrency community believe that the eternal mystery of the Сатoshi identity itself is the best interpretation of the spirit of decentralization—personal identity is irrelevant; only code and consensus matter. In this sense, regardless of who Сатoshi Накамoto is, the legacy of Bitcoin has already transcended its creator.
