The comet impact event of 1994:
Event: Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9 (abbreviated as SL9)
Time: July 1994
Process:
The comet was torn into multiple fragments under Jupiter's gravitational influence
These fragments sequentially collided with the surface of Jupiter
Observational evidence:
Large black impact scars appeared in Jupiter's atmosphere, observed through ground-based telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope, with diameters reaching that of Earth
Intense disturbances in Jupiter's atmosphere persisted for several weeks
Significance:
This was the first time humans directly observed a planet being struck by a celestial body
It proved that Jupiter indeed attracts or blocks some small celestial bodies
