The reason the market is shaking: geopolitical risks and the significance of breaking through $69.00

On Monday, Asian trading saw silver(XAG/USD) rise close to $69.00, reaching a historic high. The 2.5% surge is not just a simple price movement but a signal of a major shift in market sentiment.

Geopolitical Tensions Drive Safe-Haven Demand

Recently, tensions between Israel and Iran have resurfaced, changing investor behavior. According to NBC News, Israeli officials are concerned that Iran is expanding ballistic missile production and is in the process of restoring nuclear facilities damaged earlier this year through military operations. There is even speculation about the possibility of further military actions.

As geopolitical uncertainty increases, capital naturally flows into safe-haven assets. Precious metals like silver have traditionally served as a “safe refuge” during crises, and this role is now gaining renewed attention.

U.S. Interest Rate Outlook Remains Rigid

Interestingly, silver’s rise is moving independently of expectations for interest rate cuts. The market believes that the Federal Reserve is unlikely to cut rates at the January policy meeting. Although the November US Consumer Price Index (CPI) slowed to 2.7% year-over-year, providing some hope, it did not lead to a dovish stance from the Fed.

Looking at the US inflation data released last Thursday, October’s 3% inflation rate decreased to 2.7% in November, and the core CPI, excluding volatile energy and food prices, fell from 3% to 2.6%. Despite better-than-expected CPI results, the market interprets this as not necessarily signaling an imminent rate cut.

Today, Silver 1kg Price Likely Sensitive to Geopolitical News

The spot silver market will continue to react closely to headlines related to the Middle East and signals from US interest rate policies. Whether prices will break through the all-time high around $69.00 or experience a correction at the top depends heavily on upcoming geopolitical news and statements from Federal Reserve officials.

Investors are paying close attention to the environment where demand for safe assets and uncertainty about the interest rate path could lead to increased volatility in silver.
