Spain is making significant strides in clean energy adoption with a landmark project featuring Brenmiller Energy’s advanced thermal battery technology. The deployment, led by REBI—a prominent Energy Service Company focused on industrial heat decarbonization—represents a pivotal moment for renewable energy storage solutions across Europe.

The Technology Behind the Project

At the heart of this initiative is the bGen™ ZERO, a thermal storage system engineered to convert renewable electricity into continuous, zero-emission heat. For this specific deployment, the system has been configured with 1.4 MWh of charging capacity and 10 MWh of total storage capacity, capable of delivering 33 hours of uninterrupted discharge. This configuration addresses a critical challenge in industrial decarbonization: bridging the gap between intermittent renewable energy supply and consistent industrial heat demand.

The technology operates on a straightforward principle—renewable electricity charges the system during periods of low-cost energy availability, and the thermal battery then releases stored heat on demand according to customer requirements. This approach eliminates reliance on fossil fuel boilers while maintaining operational efficiency for energy-intensive facilities.

Strategic Partnership and Market Expansion

The project has been executed through Brenmiller Europe S.L., a newly established joint venture combining the technical expertise of Brenmiller Energy with the regional development capabilities of European partners Viridi RE and Green Enesys. The latter brings an 18-year track record of successfully developing and constructing over 100 renewable energy projects across the continent.

This partnership structure reflects a broader European push toward industrial decarbonization. REBI secured funding through NextGenerationEU’s support for innovative thermal storage solutions, implemented by Spain’s IDAE, demonstrating how public investment mechanisms are catalyzing private sector innovation in clean energy infrastructure.

What This Means for Industrial Heat Markets

The Spanish project signals growing European momentum for thermal battery adoption. Industrial steam generation remains one of the largest untapped opportunities for renewable energy integration, and this deployment proves the viability of scaling thermal storage across multiple industrial segments.

For Brenmiller Energy, the initiative marks the beginning of what executives anticipate will be a series of similar projects across Europe.
