Ocean Power Technologies Lands Strategic $2M Contract to Expand Marine Solutions in Latin America

Ocean Power Technologies (OPPT) has clinched a significant deal worth $2 million in purchase orders from Latin American clients, marking a pivotal moment for the company’s regional expansion strategy. The order comprises the company’s Next Generation PowerBuoys®, advanced systems that harness a hybrid power approach combining wave, solar, and wind energy to operate continuously across varying ocean depths.

Strategic Market Expansion in Latin America

The Latin American market represents a critical growth corridor for Ocean Power Technologies. This contract builds momentum on the back of successful WAM-V autonomous surface vessel deployments already gaining traction in the region. By introducing PowerBuoys® alongside existing offerings, the company creates a comprehensive marine intelligence ecosystem that combines both stationary monitoring capabilities with mobile operational flexibility.

The PowerBuoys® platform delivers persistent data collection and communications infrastructure for subsea and remote maritime operations—capabilities increasingly sought after across offshore energy, research, and defense sectors. The systems’ modular design allows customers to configure payload solutions both above and below water surfaces, addressing diverse operational requirements.

Strengthening Competitive Position

According to Philipp Stratmann, President and CEO, the expansion reflects Ocean Power Technologies’ commitment to delivering integrated maritime solutions. “Adding PowerBuoys® to our regional portfolio complements the autonomous vessel capabilities we’ve already introduced,” Stratmann noted. This layered approach—combining roaming ASVs with permanent monitoring infrastructure—distinguishes OPT from competitors offering single-solution approaches.

Ocean Power Technologies operates with headquarters in Monroe Township, New Jersey, and maintains additional operations in Richmond, California. The company specializes in marine robotics, autonomous systems, and intelligent maritime domain awareness solutions for defense, energy, research, and offshore wind markets.

This Latin American milestone underscores growing demand for innovative, clean-energy marine technologies as industries worldwide prioritize sustainable ocean operations and enhanced maritime intelligence capabilities.
