The first block, known as the “genesis block,” released by Satoshi Nakamoto on January 3, 2009, marked the beginning of a technology that today has profound effects on the global financial system.

Satoshi Nakamoto added a striking message from The Times newspaper to the data of block #0, which launched the Bitcoin network: “03/Jan/2009 Chancellor prepares a second bailout for banks.” This statement, referencing The Times headline, symbolized a critical stance towards the banking system immediately following the 2008 global financial crisis. The Genesis block contained only a single transaction, and the block reward was set at 50 BTC.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin’s price is hovering around $90,011, while its total market capitalization exceeds $1.8 trillion.

Before Bitcoin, there were many initiatives in the digital currency field. ecash, developed by David Chaum in the 1980s, failed to gain widespread adoption due to its centralized structure. In the 1990s, Cynthia Dwork and Moni Naor proposed the idea that computational problems could generate value, while Adam Back developed Hashcash, a proof-of-work system, in 1997.

In 1998, Wei Dai (b-money) and Nick Szabo (bit gold), prominent figures in the cypherpunk movement, presented their ideas for distributed digital currencies. However, none of these projects were fully resistant to double-spending and Sybil attacks.

The Bitcoin.org domain was registered on August 18, 2008. On October 31, 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto shared a technical document titled “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System” on a cryptography mailing list. Initially met with little interest in academic circles, this work, through a combination of diverse ideas, laid the foundation for a decentralized, Sybil-resistant, and Byzantine fault-tolerant digital currency system.

The Bitcoin software was released as open source, and the network officially launched on January 3, 2009. Nine days later, developer Hal Finney made the first Bitcoin transfer in history, receiving 10 BTC from Satoshi.

According to the database, Bitcoin has been with us for 17 years... How long has it been since the last time someone said "Bitcoin changes the world"? If I remember correctly, at least 10 years, right? The art of time will eventually be realized.

It's been 17 years, and Bitcoin is still here. It feels like the Genesis Block was mined just yesterday...

Haha, 17 years later, still the same. The key is whether we can break through the resistance level next. --- The genesis block has been around for so long. When will this round of upward momentum truly kick off? --- Waiting for the next launch countdown, BTC's fuel tank has to be filled up. --- Codes from 17 years ago are still running today. Is the escape velocity enough? I thought about this all night. --- Stop bragging. The main point is whether we can break out of the atmosphere this time. RSI has been swinging aimlessly. --- The upper band of the Bollinger Bands clearly has resistance, but the slope coefficient is still positive. Small positions wait for a breakout. --- How many people have been holding for 17 years without takeoff? The entry barrier for this game is really high.

It's been 17 years since the Genesis Block. Let's take a look at the data—over the years, there are some interesting findings about Bitcoin's actual adoption rate and the growth curve of on-chain activity. However, most newcomers might only have heard the price story.
