This is one of the most difficult chapters in the Analects. It has long become the biggest excuse for all critics of Confucius, while all Confucius fans are powerless to refute, only able to resort to excuses like the limitations of the era. The three interpretations above, as well as the usual punctuation, are “民可使由之;不可使知之.” Another punctuation is “民可使,由之;不可使,知之.” Slightly shifting Confucius from the so-called accusations of fooling the people, using the so-called education method to explain, thus providing a so-called exoneration for Confucius. The former uses the “Qi model” to slander Confucius, while the latter uses the “Lu model” to slander Confucius. Confucius once said, “‘Qi model’ and ‘Lu model’ are not the ‘Way of the Sage’; the so-called ‘Qi change’ leads to ‘Lu’; ‘Lu change’ leads to the Way.” But all those who distort Confucius are using the “Qi model” and “Lu model” that Confucius opposed to distort him—that is the historical truth.

The correct punctuation should be “民可,使由之;不可,使知之.” Here, “由” means “treading, stepping,” as in the previous chapter, and “知” refers to the wisdom of “hearing, seeing, learning, practicing”—the “Way of the Sage” mentioned earlier. The previous chapter states “由知、德者,鲜矣,” and this chapter follows from that. “可” should not be interpreted as “permission” as Kang Youwei did, which is an absurd attempt to Westernize Confucius and distort him with democratic lies. The correct meaning is “appropriate,” meaning suitable for the current position. “民” refers to the masses, the source of all practical paths. When a certain position is suitable for the current people, it is “使由之” (“let them follow”); when it is not suitable, it is “使知之” (“let them understand”). “使” means “to indulge, to be permissive,” allowing the people to fully develop their potential and wisdom.

Once you understand the previous chapter, this chapter becomes very simple. The “hearing, seeing, learning, practicing” of the “Way of the Sage” is for everyone, not just for some so-called elites. “由” and “知” ultimately come from the people and return to the people. The people’s creativity is infinite, and their wisdom is also boundless. To “let them”—to indulge and be permissive—allowing them to unleash their potential and wisdom, that is the true “hearing, seeing, learning, practicing” of the “Way of the Sage.” Only then can the “hearing, seeing, learning, practicing” of the “Way of the Sage” be truly achieved. Confucius’ chapter has been misunderstood and distorted for over two thousand years.
