$32 billion acquisition of Wiz, Google's largest acquisition ever, approved unconditionally by the EU

IT Home, February 12 — On Tuesday local time, Alphabet’s Google received unconditional approval from the European Union antitrust authorities for its $32 billion (IT Home note: approximately 221.386 billion RMB at current exchange rates) acquisition of cybersecurity company Wiz. This is Google’s largest acquisition to date, and regulators stated that the deal would not raise any competition concerns.

This transaction, announced last March, will strengthen Google’s position in cybersecurity and cloud computing. Currently, Google is competing in this field against larger rivals Amazon and Microsoft.

EU antitrust chief Theresa Ribeiro stated in a release, “Google lags behind Amazon and Microsoft in the cloud infrastructure market share. Our assessment confirms that customers will still have reliable alternative options and can switch providers.”

The European Commission, as the EU competition enforcement agency, indicated that any data Google acquires through this transaction does not involve trade secrets, and other security software companies can also evaluate it.

In recent years, such transactions have faced stricter scrutiny from regulators due to concerns that deals in the tech industry could enhance the market dominance of large corporations and exclude smaller competitors.
