It is being reported that the USS Tripoli, a warship based in Japan, along with a unit of thousands of Marines accompanying it, has set sail toward the Middle East at the request of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). There does not appear to be any D-Day style amphibious landing operation on the horizon. This ship is designed more like a light aircraft carrier. It carries F-35B stealth fighter jets, MV-22 Osprey aircraft, and attack helicopters on its deck. In other words, its operational capabilities are focused less on landing troops from sea to shore and more on air control, support, and deterrence. I think this is being done to keep the Strait of Hormuz open to international commercial shipping traffic and oil shipments
