Galaxy Digital's latest research report indicates that the potential threat of quantum computing to Bitcoin is real, but far from an existential crisis. The report shows that while quantum computers theoretically capable of breaking Bitcoin's elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA) might emerge in the mid-2030s, Bitcoin can seamlessly upgrade to post-quantum cryptography through a soft fork. The research emphasizes that current quantum computing technology remains far from breaking 256-bit encryption, and the Bitcoin community has sufficient time to implement defensive upgrades before the threat materializes.
