# Opera Browser Owners Bet on Crypto Project Celo
Opera has proposed modifications to its deal with blockchain project Celo: replacing regular cash payments over three years with a one-time receipt of 160 million CELO tokens. If token holders approve this proposal, Opera will become a key network participant, owning 27% of the circulating native cryptocurrency (16% of total emission).
Opera and Celo announced that this initiative reflects the growing role of Opera's MiniPay crypto wallet, which operates on Celo since 2023. According to the companies, since its launch in 2023, MiniPay has registered over 14 million users, and transaction volume has exceeded 420 million across more than 66 countries.
Opera's proposal, presented at Celo's governance forum, calls for replacing quarterly dollar payments with token rewards over three years. The deal will include "a one-time transfer of 160 million CELO from unspent treasury to a 'Safe' controlled by Opera."
Prior to the announcement, CELO traded at $0.076 but jumped to $0.083—a 9.2% increase. As of 18:00, the token price fluctuates around $0.081. This is significantly below its peak of around $10, recorded in August 2021.
