The wealthiest top 20% of Americans now hold approximately $49.1 trillion in stocks and funds, accounting for about 87% of the total. In contrast, the middle 40% hold only $5.9 trillion, and the bottom 40% hold even less, at just $1.5 trillion. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, the stock assets of the top 20% have increased by $29.8 trillion, a growth of 154%. Meanwhile, the remaining 80% have gained only $4.2 trillion in total. In other words, the income of the top 20% is more than six times that of the bottom 80%. Simply put, those with assets are becoming increasingly wealthy, while those without assets have hardly benefited at all.
