Iranian Navy: Vessels Must Obtain Permission to Pass Through Strait of Hormuz
On April 8, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Iranian Navy informed vessels anchored near the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday morning that they must obtain permission from Iran to pass through the strait. A recording shared by a crew member stated: “All vessels must obtain permission from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy to transit the strait. Any vessel attempting to cross without permission will be destroyed.” This message was broadcast to vessels via radio. President Trump stated that he agreed to suspend strikes against Iran for two weeks, provided that the strait can be “fully, immediately, and safely” reopened. The Iranian government has signaled its intention to continue exerting influence over the waterway. According to photos and videos shared by crew members, military aircraft continue to patrol the skies over the Persian Gulf. Most vessels remain at anchor.
