Just got asked about updating SASSA stuff, so figured I'd drop what I learned. The whole process depends on which grant you're on, honestly.
If you're getting permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), forget doing it online. You have to physically go to a SASSA office and fill out their Payment Method Change Form. Bring your ID, a recent bank statement (stamped, under 3 months old), or a letter from your bank. They send it to verify and it takes like 3 weeks. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month or you'll wait another cycle. For cellphone number changes on permanent grants, same deal - visit the office or call their helpline at 0800 60 10 11.
Now if you're on the SRD grant, that's different. The whole thing is online because they process so many applications. To update your SRD banking details, you go to their official portal, enter your ID number, and they text you a secure link. Click it, add your new bank account info, submit. Takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify. Important: account must be in your name only, no joint accounts or third-party stuff.
For updating your cellphone number on SRD, use their contact details portal. You'll need your ID and application ID. Enter the new number, pick why you're changing it (phone lost, whatever), and they'll send you an OTP to verify. That's it.
One thing - there are fake websites out there claiming to help you srd update banking details or change numbers. Don't fall for it. Always use the official SASSA link. If the online portal gives you grief, just call them or visit in person. Honestly, for anything complicated, the office visit is usually safest even if you have to wait.
