BlockBeats News, April 14 — According to Axios, a U.S. official and an informed source revealed that the United States proposed Iran accept a 20-year uranium enrichment suspension period during last weekend's negotiations. Meanwhile, Iran proposed a shorter "single-digit" number of years as a counteroffer.
A knowledgeable source said, "The U.S. proposed at least 20 years, along with various other restrictions." The U.S. also demanded Iran remove all highly enriched uranium from its territory. According to two sources, Iran indicated agreement to replace this with a "supervised dilution process."
Sources stated that disagreements over Iran's nuclear program, especially whether Tehran would agree not to enrich uranium and to relinquish its existing stockpiles, are the main obstacles to reaching an agreement.
Mediators from Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey are currently working to bridge remaining differences, aiming to reach a peace deal before the ceasefire expires on April 21.
Although no agreement has been reached, Iran believes they are close to a preliminary deal by Sunday morning, catching Vance's press conference off guard. The vice president did not hint that an agreement was near but instead criticized Iran and announced that the U.S. delegation would leave Islamabad.
An informed source said, "The Iranians were very upset about that press conference."
