Been looking back at what dominated the EV market in 2023 and honestly, the shift is pretty wild. The best selling EVs 2023 really tell you where the market's heading, and it's not just about the premium stuff anymore.
So the Tesla Model Y absolutely crushed it - over 228,000 units moved in 2022 alone. That's the kind of volume that makes you realize EVs aren't some niche thing anymore. The Model 3 wasn't far behind with around 200,000 sold, basically proving that people will buy electric sedans if the price and range make sense. Both of these became the best selling EVs 2023 for good reason: solid range (330+ miles for the Y, 358 for the 3), decent pricing once you factor in no gas, and that whole Supercharger network thing.
But here's what surprised me - the non-Tesla stuff actually started moving serious volume too. Ford's Mustang Mach-E hit nearly 40,000 units, and that's with a sporty design that doesn't scream 'practical family car.' The Chevy Bolt at $27,800 was getting called the best value play, moving about 25,000 units. Then you've got the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 both pushing past 20,000 each, which shows the Korean manufacturers really figured out the formula.
What's interesting is how the best selling EVs 2023 weren't just the expensive ones anymore. Yeah, Tesla still dominated overall, but the mid-range segment (sub-$50K) started getting real traction. The Volkswagen ID.4 with nearly 20,000 sold proved that people trust established automakers in the EV space now. Even Rivian's R1T, a truck that shouldn't have worked as an EV, moved over 13,000 units.
The range game settled around 300+ miles for most models - that's basically the sweet spot where range anxiety stops being the main conversation. Prices are still dropping too, which is probably why we're seeing these kind of volume numbers. The EV market in 2023 basically showed that the technology matured enough for mainstream adoption, not just early adopters.
