There's also New Ulm in Minnesota if you want something different, and San Elizario Texas is wild - under $1,000 monthly mortgage with basically no violent crime.

What surprised me most is how these affordable communities actually have solid livability scores despite the low cost. Most of them are in the 70-90 range. Columbus Indiana and Trenton Michigan especially stood out. The data's based on crime stats, home values, and actual cost of living data so it's not just random.
