Just did some digging on the cheapest state to buy a car and honestly the tax differences are wild. So Oregon and Montana are basically tied for best deals - both have zero sales tax which is huge. Oregon edges out Montana because dealer fees are even lower there. Like we're talking $353 in fees vs Montana's $537.
The thing is, even though Alaska and New Hampshire have crazy high car prices compared to the rest of the country, they still rank pretty high overall because of those insanely low dealer fees and no sales tax in NH. Meanwhile North Carolina has reasonable fees but higher sales tax which adds up quick.
If you're actually looking at where it's cheapest to buy a car, the sales tax situation matters more than you'd think. Even moving one state over could save you thousands. Definitely worth checking your state's tax rate before committing to a purchase.
