#Which trending AI tokens are on your watchlist? SEC and Ripple legal battle over sanctions
According to Blockworks, the ongoing legal battle between SEC (SEC) and Ripple has yet to reach a final verdict. The case began in 2020 and SEC sought nearly $2 billion in a final ruling. However, Ripple is against this amount, arguing that it is too high. The company asked the court to reduce the sentence to a maximum of $10 million.
The SEC disagreed with Ripple's proposal in a recent filing. The regulator argues that Ripple fails to explain how such a minimum penalty can effectively punish or prevent its violations, or prevent others from raising funds on a large scale in the future without the required registration. THE SEC MAINTAINS THAT THE $1.9 BILLION IT SEEKS IS PALTRY COMPARED TO THE $1 BILLION IN RIPPLE OBTAINED IN VIOLATION OF SECTION 5 OF THE SECURITIES AND COMMERCE CODE, WORTH BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, FOR THE SALE OF XRP.
In contrast, Ripple says the millions of dollars amount is fair compared to other Crypto Assets issues like BlockFi, Genesis Global, and Block.one. HOWEVER, THE SEC DISMISSED THAT ARGUMENT, SAYING THE CASE WAS ONLY A SETTLEMENT. SEC also stated that Ripple failed to demonstrate that the calculation of the SEC was not a reasonable approximation of the proceeds of Ripple illicit proceeds.
Ripple's chief legal officer, Stuart Alderrotti, commented that the registration with the SEC is very similar. He expressed optimism that the lawsuit will be resolved soon, but also acknowledged that Xu long are just beginning their journey. He trusted that the court would deal with the remedial phase fairly.
