Argentine Court Orders Nationwide Ban on Polymarket, Citing Unlicensed Gambling Operations

On March 17, an Argentine court ruled that prediction market platform Polymarket was engaged in illegal gambling and ordered a nationwide ban on its website, while requiring Google and Apple to remove its market application.

The investigation revealed that Polymarket openly circumvented regulations, allowing users to open and trade accounts without identity or age verification, enabling minors to participate without restriction.

The platform not only lacked appropriate control measures, but upon investigation was found to operate without licenses globally. This enforcement action was initiated following a complaint from the local lottery management authority, based on which prosecutors determined it constituted illegal gambling services.

The ban came amid controversy over Argentina's inflation data leak. Before the official release of February data, predictions on Polymarket already showed unusual movements pointing to higher figures, and the officially announced inflation rate of 2.9% ultimately exceeded analyst expectations.

However, minutes before the data release, trading volume on related contracts surged abnormally to approximately $91,000. This "precognitive" trading behavior directly triggered widespread suspicion about whether official data had been leaked in advance.

Argentina's ban is not an isolated case, but rather a reflection of global regulatory crackdowns. Currently, Polymarket and similar platforms face increasingly stringent legal restrictions or regulatory pressure in France, Germany, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries.

A more extreme case occurred in Israel, where authorities revealed that internal personnel had allegedly been prosecuted for using classified military intelligence to place bets on prediction platforms to profit from war outcomes. The fact that sensitive military information became gambling stakes also exposed major security vulnerabilities of such prediction platforms.

In summary, Argentina's tough ban on Polymarket and the surrounding global regulatory crackdown demonstrate that any attempt to operate outside the regulatory system and exploit information asymmetries will ultimately pay a heavy price.

Furthermore, when "prediction" becomes a chip for "speculation," the fall of the regulatory hammer is not only inevitable but also a necessary requirement to maintain order; and any attempt to abuse information advantages will ultimately face strict compliance scrutiny.
