This smart city hackathon successfully became a catalyst for promoting forward-looking innovations in the development of African cities. Supported by Gate Charity, the event brought together multidisciplinary teams to collaboratively develop innovative and responsible solutions to help transform African cities into sustainable and resilient smart cities. Participants addressed key urban challenges by integrating emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain, while also carefully considering ethical, social, and legal implications. Interdisciplinary teams consisting of 2 to 3 members worked together to develop solutions and showcased fully functional prototypes. Industry experts served as mentors, providing insights on smart city challenges, technical guidance, and ethical considerations. The jury evaluated each proposal based on feasibility, innovation, and ethical responsibility, ultimately selecting high-quality projects with the greatest potential for real-world impact.
Hackathons drive transformation through three core objectives: stimulate creativity to address specific urbanization challenges, promote interdisciplinary collaboration to develop responsible AI-driven urban solutions, and provide a dynamic platform for building prototypes with practical application value.
