On June 6, US President Trump said at a meeting with visiting German Chancellor Merz at the White House on the 5th that it would be difficult to facilitate an immediate ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in a short period of time. During the meeting, Trump repeatedly stressed that the current grievances and hostility between Russia and Ukraine are very deep, and the Russian side has made it clear that it will launch a tough counterattack against Ukraine’s attack on Russia’s strategic air base, so it is difficult to promote an immediate ceasefire between the two sides in a short period of time. Mr. Trump also likened himself to a referee in ice hockey, who would have the players scuffle for a while before intervening in a brawl on the court. During the meeting, Merz called Trump a “key figure” in stopping the Russia-Ukraine conflict, while asking Trump to exert more pressure on Russia.
