U.S. President Donald Trump made harsh criticisms against Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell ahead of the FED meeting that will conclude in the coming hours. Trump, who referred to Powell as “stupid,” said he believes the FED will not go for a rate rebate.

In statements made to reporters in front of the White House, Trump said, “We have a stupid man in charge. To be frank, it doesn’t look like he will make a rate cut today.” Stating that Europe has cut rates ten times recently, Trump pointed out that the FED has not taken the same step, accusing Powell of acting politically: “He is a political person but not a smart one. He is costing the country a lot.”

Trump argued that the FED’s policy rate should be at least two points lower. Currently, the FED’s policy rate is between 4.25% and 4.50%, and the markets do not expect a rate cut in this meeting. A possible move is anticipated to come in September.

President Trump argued that high interest rates have created hundreds of billions of dollars in financing costs for the U.S. Regarding inflation concerns, he said, “If he is concerned about inflation, I can understand. But so far, that has not been the case.”

Federal Reserve Chairman Powell and other officials have stated that caution should be exercised in interest rates due to economic uncertainties. In particular, the tariffs implemented by the Trump administration still have uncertain long-term effects.

Trump also stated that he believes Powell is personally against him: “I think he hates me, but that’s okay. He refuses to lower interest rates because he’s not a smart guy.”

Powell and Trump had a meeting at the White House recently, but the content of the meeting has not been disclosed to the public. Powell often states that they will not be influenced by political pressure, while other government officials such as Trump and Vice President JD Vance have also increased pressure on the FED.

Trump, in a humorous tone, even stated that he should be the Fed Chairman, saying, “I would do a much better job than these people.”

Jerome Powell’s term ends in May 2026. Trump recently announced that he will designate a new candidate soon.
