OpenAI is in early negotiations with Amazon regarding a deal that could bring in at least $10 billion, thereby pushing the company’s valuation beyond $500 billion. The focus of the deal revolves around Amazon’s ambition to bring AI chip Trainium into direct competition with Nvidia. The discussions are said to have started in October, after OpenAI completed restructuring and Microsoft acquired a 27% stake.
Amazon aims to leverage its partnership with OpenAI to enhance its position in AI model training, a field where Nvidia still dominates. AWS believes that Trainium offers lower costs and greater efficiency for heavy computational tasks, although it still lags behind Nvidia in software ecosystem. Last month, the two companies also signed an agreement to provide $38 billion worth of cloud resources over seven years.
In the context of increasingly fierce AI chip competition, this potential deal could help Amazon increase its influence, while OpenAI continues to attract significant capital despite analysts warning of a valuation bubble risk.
