Apple has revealed plans for generative AI, hinting that user devices will play an important role

According to CNBC on February 28, Apple revealed plans involving generative artificial intelligence (AI) at its latest shareholder meeting.

In the call, Cook said:

"Later this year, I look forward to sharing with you how we’re going to make a breakthrough in generative AI, another technology that we believe will redefine the future. ”

Cook explained that Apple sees generative AI as having “incredible breakthrough potential” and is investing heavily in the area. He added that generative AI can create transformative opportunities for users by improving productivity, solving problems, and more.

User Device

Cook said some Apple services are already using AI, including hand tracking tools in its Vision Pro VR SAFEMARS, heart rate alerts in Apple Watch, and automated emergency calling on iPhones. Cook made a similar comment in August 2023, saying that AI is already integrated into “almost every product.”

Another Reuters report suggests that, unlike some AI-based cloud services, Apple’s AI services may rely in part on their users’ devices.

Cook said:

"Every Mac powered by Apple silicon is a very powerful AI machine… In today’s market, there is no better computer for artificial intelligence. ”

Apple hasn’t publicly announced new AI features, but a Feb. 15 Bloomberg report hinted that the company is working on a feature for its Xcode software designed to compete with Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot. Both tools utilize artificial intelligence to predict and complete code.

Other possible features include AI-created music playlists, Keynote slideshows, and AI-powered Spotlight search tools.

At the same time, another Bloomberg report revealed that Apple had canceled a decade-long electric vehicle project and transferred some employees to the artificial intelligence development department.

Refusal to disclose AI Risk Disclosure Scheme

Bloomberg also reported that Apple shareholders have rejected a proposal to require the company to publish a transparency report on the ethical use of AI.

The proposal aims for Apple to share information on several AI-related social policy issues, including biased decision-making that could target employees, invasions of customer privacy, and the risk of layoffs posed by automation.

The AFL-CIO equity index fund, which has proposed a disclosure plan, has also made similar requests to companies such as Disney, Netflix and Warner Bros. The Organization also expressed concerns about the use of IP in AI training.
