On December 24th, IT Home reported that Ubisoft quietly launched ‘Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E.’, a retro arcade-style multiplayer arena shooting game, without any official marketing campaign.

The game is based on Netflix’s animated series “Laser Eagle Captain: Blood Dragon Remix”, which is an original animated series that incorporates characters from Ubisoft games such as “Assassin’s Creed”, “Rayman”, and “Far Cry”. It has a score of 7.7 on Douban.

IT Home cited game media insider-gaming as reporting that the main reason why Ubisoft has quietly released the game without any marketing is the NFT attributes of the game.

Players need to purchase NFT identity cards on the Magic Eden market on the Arbitrum L2 blockchain to participate in the game. There are currently a total of 10000 identity cards, with prices ranging from $14 to $4.4 million (where the $4.4 million price tag is clearly a joke, with an ETH price of 1337).

In the game, Rayman serves as the host of a deadly reality show, and Niji 6 organizes dangerous tournaments to find the “Defenders of Eden’s Freedom”.

Despite previous criticisms for venturing into the blockchain and NFT fields, Ubisoft has persisted with its Web3 strategy. Both ‘Laser Hawk: The Game’ and ‘Champion Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles,’ released earlier this year, have adopted Aleph.im’s NFT technology, indicating that Ubisoft has not given up on exploring this area despite external doubts.
