Zhou Yunjie: Artificial intelligence is the era of opportunity for Chinese enterprises, and more Chinese companies will continue to create internationally renowned Chinese brands.

On March 5th, at the first “representative channel” of the Third Session of the 14th National People’s Congress, Zhou Yunjie, a National People’s Congress deputy, Chairman of Haier Group’s Board of Directors, and CEO, stated that artificial intelligence is an era of opportunity for Chinese enterprises, and he believes that more Chinese enterprises will continue to create Chinese brands that are well-known worldwide.

Zhou Yunjie said that Haier is a globalized enterprise grown in the fertile soil of Shandong. He himself joined Haier in 1988 after graduating from university and witnessed the entire process of Haier’s globalization. Summing up, there are three key words: perseverance, innovation, and win-win. The first is perseverance, which means persevering to create a world-renowned Chinese brand. “Haier did not choose the path of OEM for internationalization, but insisted on building its own brand, entering developed countries first and then developing countries. It should be said that this path is very difficult. From bulk exports in 1991 to achieving profitability in overseas markets in 2016, we persisted for a full 25 years. It is this perseverance of the original intention that enabled Haier to be the first to achieve the transformation from Chinese products to Chinese brands. Haier has been the world’s leading brand of large household appliances for 16 consecutive years, with a market share of over 50% higher than the second place.”

Second, innovation. Technological innovation is a key variable for a brand to establish itself in the world. For a company to go global, it must anchor on technological innovation, continuously strive for excellence, in order to truly become top-notch. Haier has continuously benchmarked against international standards and achieved breakthroughs under such circumstances. “I remember in 2014, Haier first proposed the international standard for refrigerator preservation, which was met with opposition from many country representatives, claiming that China could not establish an international standard from scratch. Why can’t Chinese companies do it? We don’t believe that, so Haier insisted on independent innovation, proposing original technologies like oxygen control preservation, magnetic control preservation, and finally successfully released international standards in 2020. Currently, these standards have been adopted by more than twenty countries and regions including the UK and the EU.” Zhou Yunjie stated that Haier has established ten major R&D centers globally, launched over 200 original products, earned respect worldwide, led the development of over 100 international standards in the household appliance industry, and China has now become a leader in global household appliance innovation. Seven out of every ten international patents in home appliances worldwide are from China.

Third, win-win, integrate into the times, integrate into the local area, and achieve win-win results. Zhou Yunjie introduced that in the face of the wave of informatization and digitalization, Haier has transformed towards high-end, intelligent, and green development, integrated into local culture, achieved ecological win-win, and ecological co-creation, enabling Haier to reach a 53% market share in overseas markets, and the Haier brand in China is increasingly loved by overseas consumers. Haier is also committed to new quality productivity, becoming a leader in the digital economy. In 2017, Haier took the lead in launching the Chaos Industrial Platform, which focuses on large-scale customization and introduces user participation throughout the entire process, ranking first in the national double-cross platform for six consecutive years. At the same time, it led the formulation of the international standard industrial Internet functional system architecture, filling the international gap. We are confident in making Chaos into a world-class industrial Internet platform, empowering more Chinese enterprises to go global.

Zhou Yunjie said, “In the future, Haier will adhere to its main business, focus on the real economy, and focus on the three tracks of smart homes, industrial Internet, and health, contributing to the construction of a manufacturing power and a brand power.
