Gate News message, April 19 — Canadian Prime Minister Carney delivered a video address on April 19 assessing Canada-U.S. relations, stating that many “advantages” Canada previously built on its close ties with the United States have transformed into “disadvantages” that must be corrected. He called for diversifying foreign trade to address current challenges.
In the video titled “Forward Guidance,” Carney said the United States has “fundamentally changed its approach to trade,” raising tariffs to levels unseen since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Current U.S. tariffs on Canadian automobiles, steel, and lumber have already caused negative impacts. Carney emphasized that Canada cannot control disruptions from the United States and cannot rely on America suddenly ceasing these actions, stating “hope is not a plan, and nostalgia is not a strategy.”
