Gate News message, April 27 — OpenAI is collaborating with MediaTek and Qualcomm to develop smartphone processors, according to supply chain analysis by Tianfeng International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Foxconn Connector (Luxshare Precision) will serve as the exclusive system design and manufacturing partner, with mass production expected to begin in 2028. Specifications and suppliers are anticipated to be finalized by the end of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027.
Kuo explained that OpenAI’s core rationale for entering the smartphone market is that controlling both the operating system and hardware simultaneously is essential for delivering comprehensive AI agent services. Smartphones are the only devices capable of real-time access to users’ complete contextual information, which is critical for AI agent reasoning. Rather than using multiple apps, users will accomplish tasks and meet needs through their phones—a fundamental shift in how smartphones are defined.
Commercially, OpenAI may bundle subscription services with hardware and collaborate with developers to build an AI agent application ecosystem. The processor design will prioritize power efficiency, memory hierarchy management, and local execution of smaller models, with complex tasks delegated to cloud-based AI. Kuo cited MediaTek’s TPU Zebrafish chip developed for Google as a reference point, noting that a single Zebrafish chip generates revenue roughly equivalent to 30 to 40 AI agent smartphone processors. With global premium smartphone shipments reaching approximately 300 to 400 million units annually, device replacement cycles could become a new growth driver for both MediaTek and Qualcomm. For Luxshare Precision, this project offers an opportunity to secure a first-mover advantage in next-generation smartphone manufacturing, an area where it has struggled to surpass Foxconn’s position in Apple’s supply chain.
The initiative represents a significant shift in how AI capabilities are integrated into consumer hardware, with implications for the broader smartphone industry and the emerging AI agent ecosystem.
