The Trump administration is considering withdrawing U.S. troops from some NATO member countries

GateNews

Gate News message, on April 8, according to a report by the WSJ, U.S. government officials said the Trump administration is considering a plan aimed at punishing certain NATO member countries that did not support the United States and Israel during the Iran war. The proposal includes withdrawing U.S. troops from these countries and redeploying them to countries that are more supportive of U.S. military actions.

The plan is currently still in the preliminary concept stage, and is one of several punitive NATO options being discussed by the White House. The proposal is far less severe than the threat Trump has recently made to have the United States fully withdraw from NATO, and Trump does not have the authority to withdraw from NATO without congressional approval.

According to two government officials, in addition to redeploying troops, the plan could also include closing at least one U.S. military base in a European country, possibly Spain or Germany. Countries such as Poland, Romania, Lithuania, and Greece could benefit, as they are viewed as supporters. The plan could lead to more U.S. troop deployments in places closer to the Russia border, and would very likely anger Moscow.
